A pal of mine is quite the linguist and has a list of what he considers the most useless words in the English language. “If” is up there, as is “possible.” But the word that really gets on his wick is “should.” It is the epitome of uselessness apparently: which makes it just as well that he has no interest in the gee-gees because Irish racing’s Strategic Marketing Group Report would have him chewing the carpet.
