Helen Mooney delivered Emily Square with a late run to land the ladies invitational handicap at the Curragh.

The five-year-old mare finished third in this race last year but went two places better today.

She closed stealthily in the final quarter of a mile and was shaken up by Mooney to pick off Universal Focus and Miro in the final 150 yards.

Emily Square (11/2 from 8/1) kept on to see off Universal Focus (4/1cf) by a head. Miro (4/1cf) dropped three lengths back to third.

"She was a year older and 10lb better in than last year,” trainer Tom Mullins said.

“She was here a couple of times, she was unlucky a couple of times last year. I did fancy her but she hadn't won for me up till now.

“We'll see where we go now. She was given a lovely ride by Helen. She has to get there late.

“We're finding out about her as we go along but you have to drop her on the line or close to it to get the best out of her.”

Helen Mooney added: "They were kind of stopping in front of me a bit so I held on to her for long enough. It worked out.

"All of her best runs are up the Curragh, she loves it around here.

"That's nine winner including point-to-points.

"I started off riding for Dessie Hughes and I'm based with Sheila Lavery - I'm riding out in the mornings and teach Pilates in the evenings."
