Bay Of Freedom ran out a game winner in a dramatic contest for the Kevin McManus Beginners Chase at Listowel.

Kevin Sexton had Peter Fahey's charge prominent throughout in the 2m6f event and he hit the front two from home.

He had the advantage going to the last as long-time leader Kilkishen tried to rally and Woodford Island also challenged.

The former crashed out at the last and it was left to Bay Of Freedom to repel the challenge of 2/1 favourite Woodford Island on the run-in for a length-and-a-quarter success.

There had also been drama at the fifth last with both Undressed and Kerrieonvic falling.

The 8/1 winner was making his debut over fences having won a maiden hurdle and a bumper.

"He's probably not the most consistent but I'm delighted for the owner Paul Leech and his wife Kim who travel over from Boston every time he runs,” said Fahey.

“Paul is from England and rang me up a few years ago out of the blue to buy a horse - they enjoy it and it's great to get another winner for them.

"He seemed to come alive when we schooled him over fences recently and we'll tip away from here and see what mark he gets."
