The Pat Hughes trained Raise The Goblet sprang a 33/1 surprise as he took the Micheal Maher Building & Construction Services Ltd. Beginners Chase.

Ridden by Alan Crowe he travelled best into the straight, led before two out and was ridden out on the run-in to score by eight lengths at the line.

The Evens favourite Rising Time was second for Paul Nolan while hat A Island was third a further four and a half lengths back in third for Val O'Brien at 16/1.

Pat Hughes said afterwards: "Everyone who rode him in the past said he wanted firm ground not heavy.

"He had been working very well but it is a definite surprise to win on that ground.

"He never had a problem (regarding his layoff) I just left him off because he was running terrible.

"He is for sale again now. This wasn’t a wonderful race and we will see what the handicapper does now.

"I told Alan (Crowe) to ride him for fourth and if third comes to take it. I didn’t think he would be close enough to win it."
