Theturnofthesun was relatively friendless in the betting ring but the market got it wrong as he took the beginners' chase in Downpatrick by six lengths.

The 8/1 shot improved to track the leaders before three out and picked up the running before the penultimate fence.

Andrew Lynch kept him up to his work up the hill to beat Native Lass (7/1) into second. Ciankyle (33/1) was a further length and a quarter away in third.

Trainer Matthew Smith said: "He was in his own class. We saw this race a few weeks ago and it was the plan. He jumped well and Andrew (Lynch) gave him a good ride.

"We'll see what mark he gets. He's still a maiden over hurdles."

This gave jockey Lynch a double after he landed the rated novice hurdle on Foxearth

The heavily backed 7/2 favourite, Jack Slade dropped to rear and was pulled up before four out.
