Cheltenham has announced the National Hunt Chase at the Festival in March will be run in honour of the late JT McNamara.

McNamara died in July at the age of 41. He suffered life-changing injuries following a fall in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase at the 2013 Festival.

A leading amateur, he won 16 races at Cheltenham, with the last of his four Festival victories coming aboard Teaforthree in the 2012 National Hunt Chase.

McNamara is survived by his wife, Caroline, and their three children.

Caroline McNamara said: "We are humbled and overwhelmed by the continued support we receive from everyone.

"John Thomas was never one for the limelight during his career, but I am sure that he would want his life remembered for his achievements and success, especially those 16 wins at Cheltenham.

"The race being run in his name at the Festival is a huge honour in his memory."
