Phase repeats Cork success

New Phase repeated last year's success in the conditions hurdle at Cork with a comprehensive victory under Robbie McNamara.

Last season's Hennessy winner Kempes was sent off favourite (6/4 into 5/4) in the two-miler and took over from front-runner Hide The Evidence turning for home.

He was tracked through by New Phase, however, and had no answer when the 7/2 shot hit the front two out.

Dermot Weld 's charge kicked clear before the last and stayed on well for a two and a quarter length success.

The easy to back Pyscho (11/8 to 13/8) kept on better than Kempes on the run-in to claim the second spot.

"It was a very good performance by horse and rider," said the trainer's son and owner Kris Weld afterwards.

"HRI and Cork racecourse deserve to be commended for putting on the meeting so quickly again.

"They were unlucky with the sheer volume of rain that feel last weekend.

"New Phase probably doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's a very good horse and the older he gets the better he's handling the soft ground.

"Today was the plan and we hadn't looked beyond that. He jumped well."
