Punchestown could water

Racecourse manager Richie Galway has not ruled out watering ahead of the Punchestown Festival.

The five-day showpiece opens its gates on April 29 with a feast of top-class action all the way through the week.

But after a mild spring and relatively dry spell, Galway may have to turn on the taps, which will be in complete contrast to last season when the ground was bottomless.

"Spring has been very kind to us," Galway told At The Races.

"The ground currently is on the slow side of good. It has been so mild, we've had no overnight frosts.

"That makes it so much easier to manage. Last year we didn't have to cut the grass once but ever since Cheltenham we've been working on it.

"There's a bit of rain forecast for next week but other than that it is quite settled.

"If we want to water to maintain safe ground we will.

"Hopefully the meeting will answer a lot of questions that were left unanswered at Cheltenham."
