Shek O Lad came out on top of a battle with Canny Tom to land Downpatrick's extended two mile on handicap hurdle.

Canny Tom joined Shek O Lad on the run-in but the latter found that little bit extra close home to prevail by a neck under Brien Kane.

Shek O Lad was returned at 10/1 from 12s with Canny Tom a 3/1 chance. Our Rachael the 5/2 favourite, was four and a half lengths behind in third.

Trainer Des McDonogh said: "It wasn't a surprise, his run in Ballinrobe was very good the last day and last year when he made it a few times he was third a couple of times. It took time I suppose and lots of little niggles but sure he is our own.

"We'll keep him going over the winter, he seems to go on soft ground. He's a good jumper.

"Brien gave him a smashing ride, he's a good lad. He's a quiet rider, I like that."
