Preview killarney 20th Aug

Killarney's August Festival begins on Wednesday and the feature event is the Vincent O'Brien Ruby Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien has slightly bigger fish to fry at York, overseeing Australia's Juddmonte International bid, but the master of Ballydoyle dominated this Listed contest until last year and his sole representative is Sparrow, who has been kept busy at this level, without ever really threatening to break through.

Mizzava and the veteran Dandy Boy hold stronger claims, but the most interesting contender is the Dermot Weld-trained Brooch, who was long odds-on to make a successful start to her career at the Galway Festival and didn't disappoint, scoring by the best part of 10 lengths.

Red Rocks Point may have lost his unbeaten record when second to Eighteen Summers at Gowran Park, but the performance still marked him out as a decent prospect and O'Brien will be hoping he can regain the winning thread in the Ladbrokes Race, with Jim Bolger's Cosmic Cannonball his primary threat.

O'Brien and Bolger unleash a couple of expensive newcomers - namely Archangel Raphael and Robertstown respectively - in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden at 5.10, but they lack the experience of Weld's youngster Postulation, who beat all bar Jamaica at Galway.

A strong Ballydoyle team also includes Illusive, who attempts to supplement a Leopardstown triumph in the Cliffords Groundcare Limited Handicap, while Bazaar takes in the Bet Online At thetote.com Handicap on the back of a Ballinrobe success, with the presence of stablemate Waver at the top of the list keeping him on a decent racing weight.

Last-start winners Hazel Blue and Twistsandturns lock horns in a competitive Diarmuid Cronin Electrical Handicap, while the mosscontrol.ie Apprentice Maiden sees the experienced trio of Henson, Duchess Andorra and Hannah's Magic battling it out to gain that elusive first victory.
