Weasel springs a 16/1 surprise

On his 42nd career start Trotting Weasel recorded just his second win (other win came over the course and distance back in May of '08) as he took the www.dundalkstadium.com Handicap for his trainer Mick Halford with Gary Carroll aboard.

Having shown little on his five starts this year the 8yo son of Bold Fact was sent off at 16/1. However he belied those odds this evening coming through on the inside to get the better of the Lee Smyth trained Richelieu (20/1) by half a length.

The Pat Smullen ridden Wellmarked who drifted from a morning price of 7/2 out to 11/2 at the off, finished a further three parts of a length back in third while the 11/4 favourite Stones Peak finished eighth.

Winning trainer Mick Halford said afterwards: "His owner Mrs Carol Roper loves this horse to pieces and she persevered with him.

"He loves the surface here and has been running some good races but the blinkers probably sharpened him up tonight. He got a lovely run.

"He has always been a hard horse to win with and we’ll probably come back here again next Friday for a handicap over seven furlongs."
