There was an unfortunate post-script to the concluding Acquired Brain Injury Ireland Mares Bumper at Wexford today when the Philip Fenton trained Cruisingdownriver returned lame having passed the post a comfortable winner over Rathmuck Native

The winner is owned and bred by Jerry Russell, father of dual Champion Jockey Davy Russell, and having passed the post under Richie Kiely, was soon quickly pulled up.

An obviously concerned Fenton later stated “she pulled up lame and went straight to the vet’s box and we'll just have to see how she is but hopefully she'll be okay.”

“She stuck at it well and I hope she still has a future and I’m sure a mares maiden hurdle was probably in mind for her. She would have a bit of potential as a broodmare as she is from the family of Colonel Braxton (also Jerry Russell bred).”
