Review leopardstown 11th Jan

< Penny's Bill gave Liz Doyle the biggest success of her career when springing a 50-1 shock in the Pierse Hurdle at Leopardstown.

Sean Flanagan had the seven-year-old up with the pace all the way and led after the second-last, but there were plenty of challengers queuing up as they came to the final flight.

Favourite Psycho was the one who proved the biggest threat, but Penny's Bill ran on stoutly to hold on by a diminishing head.

The winner had been 6lb out of the handicap, but the late defection of Newmill meant a rise in the weights and that made a big difference to him.< Schindlers Hunt put his rivals to the sword to land the valuable Leopardstown Handicap Chase.

Dessie Hughes's nine-year-old has done his winning at around two miles, but Paddy Flood took the initiative a long way from home in the two-mile-five contest and was never headed thereafter.

The 16-1 shot had a three-length lead at the last and though getting tired on the run-in, he had four lengths to spare over Kilcrea Castle at the line.< Merchent Paddy dismissed his rivals with some authority in the Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Novice Chase.< Beroni led for much of the way, but Davy Russell eased Merchent Paddy on to his heels at the second-last and was going much the best turning into the straight.

The Charles Byrnes-trained 2-1 shot took over at the final fence and cleared away to score by 11 lengths, with Bohemian Lass in second.

Amateur Robbie McNamara rode a patient race on Dermot Weld's Majestic Concorde (7-2) and it paid off in the Leopardstown Annual Badge Beginners Chase.< Coscorrig was taking no prisoners up front and built up a big lead, but Majestic Concorde began to reel her in on the turn for home and though he was still a couple of lengths down at the last, he swept past to win by six lengths.

The Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) went to top-weight P'tit Fute (12-1), who took the last behind Kasimali but eased up to the leader on the run-in before scoring by two and a half lengths under Mark Walsh.
