Maggio has Topham safety net

Patrick Griffin is hoping Maggio makes the cut for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree, but has given him an entry in the Crabbie's Topham Chase as a back-up option.

The 10-year-old does much of his racing in Britain and was third in a handicap chase at Carlisle on his most recent appearance in February.

Co. Dublin-based Griffin said: "We are focusing on Aintree with Maggio. If he gets in, he would go for the National but if he doesn't, he would go for the Topham instead.

"We just have to take it as it comes as to which race he can go for, but Aintree is the plan with him.

"He will love the kind of ground that Aintree will provide. As regards the fences, the hustle and bustle is an unknown quantity. I feel that the horse would jump round and am optimistic that whatever race he gets in, he will deliver."

The last Irish-trained winner of the Topham was Cregg House in 2005 and there are 17 entries from this side of the Irish Sea this time around.

Champion trainer Willie Mullins has two possibles in Turban and Ballycasey, although the latter appears a likely runner in the Grand National.
