The Patrick Pendergast trained newcomer Ellery Lane wasted little time making new friends when landing a gamble to win on debut in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Median Auction Fillies Maiden at Limerick today.

Available at 10/1 this morning (minus two 20cent Rule 4s) the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor was backed from 5/2 on track into 6/4 favourite and in the end quickened nicely for a length and a quarter length win over staying-on Lost In Silence

Afterwards “Chris (Hayes) likes her a lot

I thought she’d win, had been working very well but the thing that I thought might beat her was that she was still very green.

“They went a bit slow for her but she has plenty talent and goes on fast ground.

“Her half brother was my best horse last year but suffered a fatal injury - he was very good.

“No one looked at her at Goffs (Sales) and we bought her for E14,000. I’m delighted for the owner (Richard Barnes) and she’ll go for the Grangecon Stakes (sponsored by Barnes)

- hopefully she’s learned plenty today.”
