Galway racecourse manager Michael Moloney has confirmed that the points based system for the Trainers’ Championship will remain in place this week, despite calls to alter the system following last year’s festival.

Perennial Leading Trainer Dermot Weld edged Willie Mullins by one point in 2015 despite registering three winners less (5 v 8) than the Champion Jumps Trainer, with Tony Martin finishing third overall, having trained six winners.

Moloney today confirmed that a review had taken place following last year’s festival and said “we reviewed the situation with the sponsors Chanelle Veterinary and decided to keep the same points system.

“We felt that a lot of sports have points for first, second and third and it has been the way we have worked for 20 years.”

The system operates ten points for a win, five for second and two points for a third place finish.
