Qewy has been retired after finishing only sixth in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

Winner of three major races Down Under in the past two seasons, trainer Charlie Appleby called time on his career after he finished down the field in the Group Three won by Vengeur Masque.

The seven-year-old Qewy won the Bendigo Cup as recently as November 1 and last year was successful in both the Geelong and Sandown Cups, as well as finishing fourth in the Melbourne Cup behind Almandin.

''We are delighted with the job he has done for us and he's become a bit of a local favourite down here but he's done more than enough,'' Appleby told www.racing.com.

''We'll take him home with us and find him a nice home.''

Vengeur Masque has narrowly missed the cut for the last two Melbourne Cups but should get a start next year following his win.

Appleby was also out of luck with Folkswood, who could only finish fifth behind Tosen Stardom in the Group One Emirates Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien's The Taj Mahal was fourth but jockey Ben Melham was hit with an eight-meeting ban for breaking the whip rules.

Elsewhere on the card, Redzel, winner of the inaugural Everest Stakes, followed up in the Darley Classic for Peter Snowden and Kerrin McEvoy.

McEvoy also enjoyed success on William Haggas' Fastnet Tempest but he will now stay in Australia to be trained by David Hayes.
