Cecil Corbett served up a 20/1 surprise in thetote.com Connacht National Handicap Chase at Roscommon to give Gordon Elliott and Davy Russell a double on the card.

The 12-year-old gelding crept into contention after the second last and came to tackle Full Cry at the final fence.

He then hit the front on the run-in and was ridden out to take the feature by two and three quarter lengths.

Full Cry gave best on the run-in of this extended three-mile contest and had to settle for second at 12/1. He was two and a half lengths in front of 4/1 favourite Ellie Mac

Russell said: “He jumped great and stayed really well. He seems to run best fresh and just kept going. All credit to the trainer and he’s owned by a lovely man as well."

Cecil Corbett was last seen pulled up at Punchestown in November.

The Stewards interviewed H. Morgan, rider of Full Cry, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that H. Morgan was in breach Of Regulation 10.3(g) (frequency) and having considered his record, they suspended him for one race day.
