Lingstown will always have a special place in Liz Doyle's heart given that she started her career in the saddle at the Killinick Harriers, Tomhaggard, County Wexford venue, about twenty years ago now.

On Sunday last, with her trainer's hat on, Doyle sent out her father Fred's newcomer, Mac's Return for the Royal Marine Hotel Maiden Race for 5-y-o geldings. Jamie Codd (treble on the day with Bothair Clei and Balynaclash Warrior) got the leg-up on the Flemensfirth gelding.

Mac's Return's main market rival, Here I Am departed at the third last.

However, Mac's Return was always moving like a good horse and he had the measure of The Orange Rogue and High Web from before the last, going on to beat that pair by eight lengths and twelve lengths.

Ms Doyle explained afterwards: "He was bought at the Derby Sale. Ferdy (Murphy, father of Doyle's partner Barry) had Mac's Supreme (a half-brother to the winning dam, Dark Mist) and of course he won a Kerry National.

"This fella was fairly good value and I told Jamie he'd win here. I'm delighted I've put him on a winner. He was more than happy with him saying that he's uncomplicated and professional.

"They went a good gallop and that suited him. It would be nice if he was sold to stay in the yard but we'll have to see." (EM)
