Willie Murphy said of Burren River in an Irish Field stable tour as far back as November 2011: "This fellow was ready to run and had a few coughs so that will put him back a couple of weeks. He will run soon as it shouldn't put him back too far. His dam won a bumper on her debut for Nicky Henderson."
Well on his belated debut at the Killinick Harriers point-to-point meeting at Lingstown, Tomhaggard, County Wexford last Sunday, Burren River was the main horse punters wanted to know about in a rain-lashed ring. The confidence proved well-founded.
Sonny Carey rode Burren River and the six-year-old son of Amilynx got the better of the game front-runner, Croghill Tuppence (his turn should be just around the corner) by three lengths.
It was recalled in the aftermath that Murphy and Carey scored with Burren Bridge at this venue back in 2010. He unfortunately met with injury since.
Out of an Orchestra mare in Fast Fiddler, it was hardly surprising to hear the Ballycurragh Stud-operator say that Burren River loves soft ground. This was a good start to the attractive gelding's career and his future progress will be watched with interest. (EM)
