Court Jester sprang a 25/1 shock in the two mile handicap hurdle at Down Royal, and gave jockey Jody McGarvey a double on the day.

Sammy Wilson trains the six-year-old gelding in Ballygowan Co Down and he commented: “He’s a stronger horse now. He’s a different horse, but not a champion!”

“His jumping has always been plenty good enough. His owner, Stuart Thompson, is my nephew and is a travel agent from Saintfield Co Down.”

The winner made good headway before three out, and forged on after the last to record a victory by two and a half lengths. Miranour and Mattie Bowes occupied the runner-up spot at 6/1 while previous Grade 3 winner Great Oak never got on terms and finished third at 6/4.

Court Jester brought a smile to Tote punters as he paid £39.90 for a £1 win there.
