Rejuvenated by a spell 'between the flags' earlier this year, Penny's Bill, the 2009 Pierse Hurdle hero, bounced back to something approaching his best to convincingly land the Bettyville Park Veterans Handicap Steeplechase at Wexford under Declan Bates.

The lightly-weighted Rashar chestnut was looking good in this valuable two mile three furlong event from some way out. He got the better of Bob Lingo from before the last before going on to score by two lengths.

Owned and trained in the Model County, and also ridden by a Wexford man, this was a popular success with Penny's Bill's trainer Liz Doyle explaining: "He's a nightmare to train as he's very delicate.

"His jumping had gone to pot so I ran him in a couple of point-to-points with today's race in mind. There's only one of these in the calendar.

"He won his beginners chase over the same trip and everything was perfect for him today.

"He only got here 20 minutes ago as we're only a mile away as the crow flies – it's a very local winner.

"I'm absolutely thrilled as this race was made for him and his owners, Penny and Bill Foley (from Newbawn) are great." (DM & EM)
