J.A. Heffernan, rider of Nelson trained by A.P.O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount ran out of racing room in the straight. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Nelson, ridden by J.A. Heffernan, and trained by A.P.O'Brien. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. J.A. Heffernan, stated that his instructions were to settle his mount on the rails taking advantage of his inside draw and to finish out his race strongly. He added that he settled his mount towards the rear before staying on well. He concluded by saying that he ran out of racing room in the straight and had to ease his mount in the latter stages to avoid interference. A.P.O'Brien, confirmed the instructions and expressed his satisfaction with the ride. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Nelson was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
