Not a lot of strength in depth here but a nice performance from January, who had shown a glimpse of ability on his hurdling debut at Navan.

The much better ground here looks likely to have brought about improvement in the son of Daylami, who had finished a fair fifth on his sole Flat run for Goldolphin.

Ruby Walsh produced him to lead approaching the last and he stayed on well to settle matters. The winner attracted good support (11/4 to 9/4) with owner Mick Ryan on hand to welcome him back in.

He always looked like holding the fast finishing Define, who ran a race full of promise on his debut over timber.

The Definite Article gelding, a decent type on the Flat, was ridden along in third before the last but found another gear on the run-in to flash home.

He should be landing a maiden hurdle over the summer months.

Romarca was a well backed favourite (3/1 to 2/1) but had no answer when headed by the winner running to the last.

He has some fair form behind River Liane at Leopardstown early last month and looks a decent yard stick.

Mayday Frontier looked an eye catcher on his debut. He stayed on into fifth three out and kept at it well to go fourth before the last. Given normal improvement he could go close in a similar class maiden somewhere.

Another debutant to run well was Mollysue. She chased the leaders throughout and disputed going to the third last. She had no extra to offer before the second last but it was a promising effort.

Little Rose Hopper was reported to have hung badly before being pulled up.

Direct Exit, Galley Light, Good Knight, Sir Mozart, Andrews Pet, Dipp In The Dark and Martel were all absent because of the ground.
