This year's renewal lost some of its gloss with the withdrawal of the Espom Derby winner New Approach (lame) on the morning of the race and was further diminished by the antics of Alessandro Volta in the closing stages.

The Ballydoyle trained first string got a lovely run through on the inner turning for home and soon poached a couple of lengths lead, but was under strong pressure when he edged right onto the far rail with a furlong to run. Johnny Murtagh switched his stick into his right hand and Alessandro Volta then veered sharply left badly impeding Curtain Call (every chance at time) and carrying the favourite Tartan Bearer (also every chance) across the track.

Frozen Fire, which had been last turning for home, came wide of the trouble and ran out a comfortable two lengths winner. He had finished well back at Epsom, but was certainly going to be involved in the finish regardless of the interference and may have possibly won anyway.

Casual Conquest also had a clear passage and got up for second.

At the moment of the incident it appeared that Tartan Bearer was about to go and win his race with Curtain Call set for a place at least.

The form had a further shadow cast upon it by the proximity of the pacemaker Bashkirov in sixth. He has an official rating of only 90 and was beaten less than five lengths.

Following a stewards' enquiry Alessandro Volta was placed behind Tartan Bearer in fourth, but allowed to remain ahead of Curtain Call which was somewhat of a surprise.

Colm O'Donoghue reported that his mount Washington Irving lost his action at halfway.
