Dermot Weld's charge failed to pick up in the heavy ground as Penitent ploughed through the mud to win the Group 2.
Stretching his unbeaten record to two since joining trainer David O'Meara, the six-year-old was always going well for Daniel Tudhope.
Two out it was clear his only danger was fellow 5-1 chance Questioning and the pair fought out a sustained duel to the line with the northern raider a length-and-three-quarters in front where it matters most.
There was an eight-length gap back to 15/8 favourite Famous Name in third.
Dermot Weld said of Famous Name: "He's won 10 times at Leopardstown, I know he won once there when it was testing, but usually it's much quicker.
"It was a solid run in the circumstances and we may well end up going back to Leopardstown."
