FormscanBy Vincent Finegan - This year’s renewal of the great race is wide open and cases can be made for most of the field having some chance of at least reaching the frame. The obvious two leading contenders are Sir Dragonet and Telecaster which have both been supplemented at a cost of 85,000 pounds each on the back of impressive recent performances. When connections stump up large sums to run in races like this you can be sure the horses are in peak condition and have had no setbacks. Ryan Moore rides Sir Dragonet in preference to the other six Ballydoyle trained runners but as we have seen time and time again any runner from this source is capable of springing a surprise. Aidan O’Brien is mob-handed in his pursuit of a record equalling seventh Derby success and his runners could well dominate but the one I like most in the field is MADHMOON trained by the veteran Kevin Prendergast. At this stage that opinion is possibly as much based on sentiment as form. He was brilliant on his two juvenile starts and finished well in the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas when fourth to Magna Grecia on his second outing of this campaign. That Guineas form has taken a few knocks since with the winner and third among seven horses from the race to beaten on their next outing. The trip is an unknown for MADHMOON as it is for several of the others in this line up but as the whole field are direct descendants of the 2001 winner of the race Galileo we can presume it shouldn’t be an issue for any of the runners. Chris Hayes will be in the saddle on MADHMOON and has impressed on the domestic front for a number of years and will no doubt relish this opportunity on the biggest of all stages.
