FormscanBy Tom Weekes - MELON might be able to upstage star novice Samcro and win this intriguing race. MELON was never a star novice but did show a high level of ability then and his progression in recent times has been impressive. He received 3lbs when beating today's rival Coquin Mans in November but subsequently pulled too hard at Cheltenham in December. He then disappointing badly, when notably weak in the market, at Leopardstown in February but ran a career best when second to Buveur D'Air in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham last month. A reproduction of that latest run would give him every chance today. Samcro has been hailed as the 'second coming' in his wins as a novice hurdler this season and while he comes here as the horse to beat, is now tested against seasoned rivals. He has enormous potential but whether or not MELON's recent Champion Hurdle run was better than what Samcro achieved in winning at Cheltenham (where the runner-up and third since won Grade 1 novices) is debatable, and there is also a niggling concern over whether or not Samcro's best trip is two miles, or slightly further. Supasundae beat a well below-par MELON when winning at Leopardstown in February and while he since filled second place in the Stayers Hurdles at Cheltenham, could prove vulnerable to high class and pacier performers today. Wicklow Brave won this race last year when bolting from the front but might now struggle to turn recent Champion Hurdle form with MELON while stablemate Min would be a surprise winner but can pick up another cheque today.
