Racing experts have backed Nurburgring to create history by becoming just the second horse to win both the Galway Plate and Galway Hurdle.

Last year’s Galway Hurdle winner is the market leader for next week’s Galway Plate where he will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Ansar who won the Hurdle in 2001 and the Plate four years later.

Nurburgring, who won the Lee Strand Novice Chase at Killarney last week, has subsequently shortened into favourite ahead of the Galway Plate.

Recent Victory Boosts Confidence

"It was hard to believe Nurburgring is just breaking his maiden over fences. I suppose maybe thinking back to the Cheltenham Festival, people thought he might have been getting plotted out for that, but he got off the mark and goes to the Plate," said racing expert Emma Nagle on irishracing.com’s The Irish Angle podcast this week.

“He’s a horse that obviously loves Galway. He got a bit of a freebie from the start last year but you can’t beat Galway form going into the Galway Festival.”

Jesse Evans A Tough Path Ahead

Jesse Evans is also among the 32 entrants for the Galway Plate which takes place on day three of next week’s Festival.

The nine-year-old has finished second in three previous Galway Hurdles and finished eighth in the race last year.

Speaking on The Irish Angle, Johnny Ward questioned whether Jesse Evans will be able to break their Festival duck next week.

“I was sweet on Jesse Evans with a view to the Plate. You absolutely need horses with a bit in hand that are lightly raced.

“I got the impression from Noel Meade, he's just not confident he gets the trip. With Noel winning the race last year, he’s not lost his ability to win at Galway, but you can't really back a horse whose trainer doesn't have faith in him getting the trip in a Galway Plate."
