The mother and son team of Mags and Danny Mullins were on the mark as Perfect Leader successfully reverted from fences in the Kehoe Brothers Machinery Handicap Hurdle at Wexford.

The nine-year-old has rewarded connections patience winning twice over fences this year, and justified joint favouritism here.

The 4/1 chance jumped to the front at the penultimate flight, and kept on best under pressure on the run-in to beat Iamastartoo by length and a quarter. Lady Of The Sea kept on in the straight to finish a further five lengths back in third.

Danny Mullins said, “I was away on holidays (in South Africa) last week so my mother was at home doing all the hard work. She said to ride him today with a bit of confidence and thought he’d go very close. She’s not a bad judge!

“He was creeping up all the time over fences, and we were keen to try and exploit the hurdle mark. Two miles seems to be his trip, and he’s gaining a lot of confidence now and hopefully we’ll get a bit more out of him.

“South Africa was the holiday of a lifetime. We did a riding safari for five days and also went to Victoria Falls which was amazing.”
