Horse In Profile: Giselle The Flat season is now in full swing and with that comes the puzzle of trying to figure out which Aidan O'Brien-trained horse is the one to be on for the upcoming Oaks at Epsom in June. The filly we are going to focus on will be running in the Listed Oaks Trial at Lingfield on Saturday and with Ryan Moore booked for the ride and with only two rivals to beat, she is likely to shorten for the main event next month. Her dam was a winner in the US at trips ranging from 7f-8.5f, including a Grade 1 victory, and she is a half-sister to 6f Listed winner Classical Times, who is out of a half-sister to the dam of Latrobe, a winner of the Irish Derby, and Pink Dogwood, who finished second in the Oaks. So Giselle's pedigree certainly ticks a lot of boxes. Runner-up to classy stablemate Bedtime Story on debut over 7f at Leopardstown, she landed the odds next time over that trip at the Curragh, keeping up to her work to win by half a length. Giselle was then sent off odds-on for the Group 3 Fillies' Staffordstown Stud Stakes but she could never get on terms with the leaders, running quite keen early, eventually finishing third behind stablemate Whirl. It's quite clear that this girl should improve a lot for a step up in trip so it will be interesting to see how well she does at the weekend. Lingfield raid next up It has to be said that the turnout for the Listed Oaks Trial over around 1m4f on Saturday is nothing short of a major disgrace, with just three runners set to go to post for the contest. What clues will we learn for the actual Oaks? None. Nonetheless, Giselle seemingly has a very handy task at hand, at least on paper. The second favourite is the Simon & Ed Crisford runner Harpsichord, who is rated only 84 on the all-weather, and she will need to improve at least a stone to trouble the favourite, who is rated 96 on turf at present. The other runner in the field is Grant Tuer's Love Talk, who is rated 91 on turf, and it's a nice bit of placement by connections who will pick up at least £6,456 for finishing last of the three runners. This girl hasn't gone beyond a mile yet and struggled over a mile last time. Could Giselle win the Oaks? Giselle will need to win the Oaks Trial very convincingly to warrant shortening in the betting for the Oaks. She is currently top-priced 20/1 with several firms for Epsom Oaks success next month and given she is long odds-on for this contest on Saturday, she is likely to shorten for next month's Classic off the back of this run.
