Sindagan scores for Murtagh and Coen

A dart towards the inner proved the decisive move as the Johnny Murtagh-trained Sindagan led home a one-two in the late Aga Khan’s colours at Galway. Almeiyda was soon in front in the seven furlong contest but was pressed by Sindagan turning for home and Ben Coen soon sent his mount to the rail to avoid the loose horse.

He hit the front passing the furlong pole and stayed on well in the closing stages to post a length success.

The 9/4 joint-favourite had been placed in four of his previous five outings and had a lofty rating of 96.

"With his rating alone, he had a great chance and he has been consistent all year. He ran into a very good horse the last day, when he finished seven lengths clear of the third,” said Murtagh.

"The Irish handicap system is hard on you (moving from 83 to 96) but, saying that, at the start of the year I did think he would get to that mark. However finishing second and going to 96 is hardship, but it is all about today and it is great to get a winning bracket.

"There is a seven-furlong Listed race in Cork for him next." Punica Granatum had unseated Shane Foley when stumbling badly after a furlong-and-a-half. Thankfully the jockey was soon back on his feet.
