"He was probably a little bit disappointing the last day compared to his previous run," acknowledged Fran Berry after he'd gotten Drillmaster (7/1) home by half a length and a head from Prove The Point and Power Grid (didn't get the run of the race) in the Get 10/1 On Conor McGregor To Win At Coral.ie Handicap at Dundalk.

Drillmaster attracted some support in the market this morning but he was easier to back on track.

That didn't stop the Charles O'Brien-trained grey coming home best to prevail in this seven furlong contest.

"They went a real good gallop and the fast pace suited him as he used to be keen," added Berry.

"He'll probably go another furlong judged on that as he was only getting going in the last furlong.

"He handles that surface well and hopefully there should be another one in him."

This was Fran Berry's first win of the year in Ireland. Back from Japan, of course he was recently announced as the new number one for Ralph Beckett.

F.M. Berry, rider of Drillmaster (USA) trained by Charles O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount hung left in the straight.

The Stewards enquired into an incident about 150 yards from the finish involving Crazy Tornado ridden by C.J. McGovern, placed fifth and Power Grid, ridden by G.F. Carroll, placed third, where it appeared both horses made contact. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that the incident was accidental in nature and took no further action.
