Gordon Elliott completed a good day at Downpatrick when Canny Tom gave him a treble in the Frank Fitzsimons Memorial Beginners Chase.

The Jimble gelding finally opened his account at the 26th attempt at Tramore in August but needed only two tries over fences before getting off the mark in this sphere. Solar Heat looked to have stretched her rivals when kicking clear before the second last but Canny Tom stayed on well to pick her up on the run-in and record a three-parts-of-a-length win under Keith Donoghue.

8/1 shot Canny Tom had been third behind Persian Wind on his chasing debut at Tramore eight days ago.

Keith Donoghue said afterwards: "He did it well, he's very consistent. He always runs his race. I knew there would be plenty of pace today and I knew that would suit him. It was a good gallop and it fell right for him.

"Friends of mine own him so it's good to get another win out of him.

"He jumped brilliantly. Hopefully there's more to come but he is after winning a hurdle and a chase now so he owes us nothing."
