Capel At Dawn defied a 20/1 starting price to fairly career away with the Abbey Electrical Services Celebrate 60 Years In Business Handicap at Naas.

At the sixth time of asking three-year-old Dawn Approach filly Capel At Dawn, left behind a twelfth placing at Leopardstown on June 9th, to beat Cobb And Co by three and a half lengths.

Dylan Browne McMonagle rode Capel At Dawn for the Capel Street Syndicate and trainer Joseph O’Brien.

“She ran well a couple of times last year and last week at Leopardstown she got into trouble everywhere she went and was staying on,” said O’Brien’s representative Brendan Powell.

“Today it was straight forward up there handy and she stays the mile well. She could probably go a bit further if you wanted her to.

“She’s lost her maiden tag now. It wouldn’t be the greatest race in the world but they are all competitive. She’s only a lightly raced filly and hopefully there will be more improvement.”

The Stewards informed J.F. Levins, trainer that Dark Magic (GB), would have to be recertified before being declared to run from stalls again.

The Stewards interviewed D. McMonagle, rider of Capel At Dawn, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and in the presence of Brendan Powell, Authorised representative for Joseph Patrick O'Brien, Master of the rider. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that D. McMonagle was in breach of R10(3)(g) by using his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his previous record into consideration, the Stewards suspended D. McMonagle for 1 raceday.
