High School Days got off the mark in Ireland when proving too strong in the Thomastown Handicap Hurdle at Gowran Park.

The four-year-old American-bred filly stalked Effernock Lad into the home straight before easing into the lead at the second last. Dixie Highway set off in pursuit but was a couple of lengths adrift at the last.

A slight mistake by the leader opened the door but Dixie Highway couldn't take advantage as High School Days was driven out by Donie McInerney to score by a length and three quarters at 7/1.

Dixie Highway (12/1) had to settle for second with Wild Sam a further 12 lengths away in third at 25/1.

Donie McInerney said: "She travelled turning in well and if anything I got there a bit soon. She was a bit lazy turning in and I had to grab a hold of her.

"Once I gave her a slap down the neck, I knew going to the second last she was never going to stop. It's grand to get the job done today."

Trainer Henry de Bromhead added: “I was worried about the ground but Eddie (O’Leary) said we should take our chance and he was spot on. She jumped great and I’m really looking forward to her over a fence in time.

“She settled really well as she’d been a bit keen in her maidens. Donie is a lovely quiet rider and that’s the first winner he’s ridden for me. He looks a good claimer.”

High School Days formerly won on the Flat in France.
