Jazz Lady made a winning return to handicap company when scoring by a wide margin in the Galway Apprentice Handicap this evening.

Ian O'Connor 's charge had run a big race in a maiden at Listowel last Friday when stepped up to a mile-and-a-half and confirmed that form with a powerful performance tonight. Cavelli made a bold bid form the front in the 45-70 contest and had a healthy lead at halfway.

She was chased down going to the turn by Jazz Lady, however, and the eventual winner took over early in the straight.

Aaron Mackay kept his mount going in the closing stages as she drew clear to record a seven-and-a-half length success.

"We entered her today as I knew we'd get a slap on the wrist for being placed in her maiden, which she did as she got 10lbs so it worked out tonight,” said O'Connor.

"It is no secret she has ability as she was placed for Tom Cooper but she is a very tricky filly to train.

"We'll give her a bit of a break now as she has been on the go a nice bit and has done her job. We'll see what happens to her after today and hopefully there will be another day in her.

"I'm delighted as it's over a year since my last winner. I have six horses in training and I'm based in Glenbeigh in Kerry. I'm very grateful for all the owners I have as it's been a quiet summer but they've all stuck by me."
