First time blinkers worked a treat on Faerie Laws as she made the breakthrough in the Roscommon Claiming Maiden.

A good second on her handicap debut at Gowran in April, the Willie McCreery trained bay disappointed on her next two starts at the Co Kilkenny venue.

Sent off a 12/1 chance this evening, the daughter of Lawman was settled behind the leaders by Wayne Lordan and was pushed along in fifth entering the straight.

Soon ridden, she improved into a close second over a furlong from home, and despite running around a bit in the closing stages, she kept on best to prevail by half a length. Cafe Con Leche (12/1) kept on nicely to take second under Seamie Heffernan for Denis Hogan, while Sevenaday (25/1), who attempted to make all, was another three parts of a length back in third.

The Joseph O'Brien trained Royal Court was the 13/8 favourite and he finished a disappointing eleventh, his sixth time to be a beaten favourite.

McCreery, who trains the winner for the Onlyamatteroftime Syndicate, said afterwards: "I wanted Wayne because he could do the weight and he suited that filly as she needed a strong ride. He got a lovely break and sat in a good position the whole way.

"She idles a bit but today was her first time in full blinkers and the rain came at exactly the right time as she needs that bit of ease in the ground. I'm happy for the owners and she is a winner now."

After the race, there were three claims for Sevenaday (for E5,000), with Thomas Coyle the successful new owner/trainer.
