Kemboy picked up where he left off last season when claiming the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase on his return to action this afternoon.

Willie Mullins charge had progressed well during his novice campaign last season, culminating in a commanding victory in a hot handicap contest at Punchestown.

The Voix Du Nord gelding was sent off 11/8 favourite for his comeback and proved best in the two-and-a-half mile contest.

Paul Townend tracked last year's winner Alpha Des Obeaux (6/4) before sending his mount up to dispute before the second last.

There was nothing between the pair going to the last but a fine leap by Kemboy gave him the advantage and he went on to record a three-length victory.

"I hadn't him declared at 10am yesterday and with the new HRI initiative of reopening races with a small amount of runners, he was the first one I've ever declared after 10am. I said we'd chance it and it worked out for us,” revealed Mullins.

"I was delighted with him because I didn't think he could be that straight and I wondered was I running him too quick before the Ladbrokes (Trophy, at Newbury). He was very fresh and very free and that was smart to do that today.

"I imagine he goes to the Ladbrokes now and I'm told he has a mandatory 4lbs penalty for winning this.

"I had Paul on the two chasers today and Ruby on the hurdlers, that's all, and with the big weekend ahead that was the only reason. Paul was good on this fellow before and I don't know if there is a queue to ride Camelia De Cotte (in the next)!

"And Paul is going well in the Championship too so I'd be delighted to see him Champion again but who knows as it's an open year."

He added "Jason Morris, of HRI - his mother died so condolences to him and his family."

Paddy Power shortened the winner from 12/1 into 10/1 for the Labrokes Trophy at Newbury on December 1st.
