- Stewards Report
Permission was given for Natural Colour (GB) to wear a hood in the parade ring only.
Approximately 3 furlongs out, Colleague (GB), unplaced, hung right-handed off the rail at the same time that Roundel (GB), unplaced, edged slightly left-handed, causing Paddyplex (GB), placed seventh, to be steadied when short of room, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Rectory Road (GB), ridden by Alice Bond and trained by James Ferguson, which broke slowly from the stalls and raced in the rear throughout before staying on well from an unpromising position leaving the back straight to finish sixth of twelve runners, beaten by 8 lengths.
The rider and the trainer's representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that 2 post-race examinations of the gelding, before and after routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated her instructions were to jump out, get Rectory Road (GB) settled with cover and do her best thereafter.
Bond explained that the gelding had been awkward leaving the stalls and missed the break, which was not uncommon for this horse.
She indicated that this enabled her to cross over and find the rail very quickly from stall 13.
Bond added the early pace was fast and the gelding got a long way back, but she was able to make ground through along the inside down the back straight and get a more competitive position.
Bond further added that leaving the back straight she elected to follow the inside rail and became trapped behind a weakening Colleague (GB), unplaced, and inside PAADYPLEX, placed seventh, which left her held up and unable to improve her position.
Once able to secure clear running from approaching the home turn, Bond placed Rectory Road (GB) under full pressure and considered the gelding made solid headway through to the line.
The trainer's representative confirmed the instructions, and that they had essentially been carried out, but did acknowledge that the gelding would have finished much closer had he not encountered a troubled passage at a crucial stage of the race.
Bond also submitted that she was inexperienced with this being only her 18th race ride and many of those have been confined to apprentice only races.
Bond was suspended for 7 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure Rectory Road (GB) was given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing, in that she failed to switch wider to follow runners into the race and improve her position when there was clear opportunity to do so and resulted in the gelding running into a pocket and losing ground and momentum when denied a clear run from approaching 3 furlongs out to approximately 2½ furlongs out.
Following the race, Kieran Shoemark reported that Roundel (GB), unplaced, had changed its leads on several occasions throughout the race.
