By Mark Nunan - BAD DESIRE chased home a useful Ballydoyle-trained colt on his debut at Galway in August and, although last of six, wasn't beaten all that far in a Group 3 at Chantilly the following month. He representsan in-form trainer/jockey combination and sets the standard while any further rain that falls will be to his advantage. Super Sox, third at Dundalk earlier in the month, is speedily bred so stepping up in trip by a furlong isn't sure to suit but Paddy Twomey rarely makes the wrong call in thesematters and his strike-rate has been typicallyimpressive in the opening weeks of the campaign. Ata Rangi ran well when fifth in a back-end Curragh maiden and is a likely improver whileHelp Me Rhonda cost 110,000gns as a yearling and is a half-sister to four winners.
By Mark Nunan - Dual winner KARLSBERG has finished second on her reappearance in each of the last two seasons so her absence since July is not a major concern. Shane Crawley's mare is back down in this grade for the first time since winning over 7f here in 2021 and may be able to take advantage under a claimer who has ridden winners for the yard. Martin and Wayne Hassett were narrowly denied a winner at Gowran on Wednesday and Magic Charm, a winner at the Curragh last term, should come on from his seasonal debut at that venue which saw him finish third in a big field in March. Toriangel has steadily come down the ratings but shaped with promise a few times last season while Spring Collection was narrowly denied at Naas two starts ago and has Colin Keane's assistance.
By Mark Nunan - SUMIHA looked a promising type when winning a Curragh maiden over 1m2f in August and is taken to cope with the step up to stakes company. The daughter of Sea The Stars should have no problem with the extra quarter-mile and the filly she beat at the Curragh, Thunder Roll, went one better in a Listed contest at Galway next time. The latter lines up here under a 3lb penalty and had a good run in a Group 3 over course and distance earlier last year so merits plenty of respect. Countess Of Tyrone easily won a Galway maiden last summer and is another taking a big rise in class. The bare form is nothing special but respect for her trainer means she has to be on the shortlist. Trevaunance was a dual Group winner in France in 2022 and ran well in Group 1 company a couple of times last year. She didn't shine in two runs in Dubai in the spring but should be sharper for them.
By Tom Weekes - LA JULIANA was beaten by Expecto last October but is marginally less exposed and steps up in distance on her first start aged three. Out of a half-sister to a Group 1 winner, she gained her handicap mark over shorter distances last year, can progress and is 4lb better off with Expecto than at Gowran. Expecto herself steps up in distance and achieved her rating from sprint maiden distances and can also progress. Natural Ruler was a beaten odds-on favourite in a recent Dundalk handicap and while well held by the easy winner, steps up markedly in distance which might bring about improvement. Gregorinaran ran well at Dundalk recently but is a 13-race maiden while Jurality is tried in first-time blinkers and Dont Do Dramas steps up in distance.
By Tom Weekes - Galileo-sired HIGHBURY cost E650,000 as a yearling and is out of a Group 3-winning dam whose own granddam was champion American filly Surfside. The Ballydoyle runner has obligatory entries in the Epsom and Irish Derbys and could be smart. Himalayan Heights ran quite well on probably unsuitably testing ground on Leopardstown debut. There are plenty of French stakes performers in his pedigree and he could put his experience to good use. Aztec Sun is from an Aga Khan pedigree, is a half-brother to a Group 2 winner with his dam being a half-sister to a Group 1 winner. He was well held on Dundalk debut last November but shaped nicely and should improve. Royal Entry (wearing an eye-shield) is a sister to two black-type performers including Group 3 winner Smash Williams while Birdman is out of a winning half-sister to two Group 3 winners including Elusive Pimpernel. Frankel-sired Alonzo was reported to have 'lost his action shortly after leaving the starting stalls' when pulled up last year and is second-string today.
By Tom Weekes - Homeless Songs' brother SPOKEN TRUTH ran well on debut last October. That Leopardstown form is nothing outstanding albeit the winner is now rated 91, but the selection wasn't beaten far and ran quite well to the line, suggesting he will improve for a trainer who sent Harzand to win a course-and-distance maiden in the past. Bacchanalian is by a top stallion and himself ran well at the Curragh last October. That winner was subsequently Group 1-placed and he too is open to plenty progression. Psalm is experienced and finished ahead of subsequent maiden winner Agenda last October but is vulnerable to smart types and runs in a first-time tongue-tie. Slaney Swagger has a race-fitness edge and has place claims while homebred Maharajjah is a half-brother to four winners.
By Tom Weekes - Top weight STROMBERG showed good juvenile form and drops in grade on reappearance. He won by huge margins at Galway and Roscommon last year and while beaten in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes, met some interference and wasn't beaten too far by smart types. The selection also has plenty of big-race entries. Frankel-sired Euphoric is similarly well-entered and won on October debut. The runner-up has won twice subsequently and while Euphoric is open to more progression, nonetheless meets a capable selection. Neski Sherelski defeated a subsequent all-weather maiden winner on Dundalk debut in January but faces a stiffer test and is second-string. Messerschmitt has size and should progress but steps up from his Thurles debut dead-heat win. Bremen was unable for stakes level last autumn and has a bit to find.
By Tom Weekes - Race-fit TAKE HEART finished mid-field in the Lincoln and will be better suited to this drier ground. Ideally suited by this distance, he ran well in another valuable Curragh handicap last September and reverts to that same distance. Notstringattached is also suited by this distance. Her form is largely on easy ground but was placed on yielding and, being somewhat unexposed as a lightly-raced type, can progress. Cristal Clere seems ground-versatile and while he has top weight, today's same rider was unable to claim his 7lb allowance when finishing fourth at Listed level recently, for which he has been raised 2lb. Jaafel's show-price collapsed from 9/1 to even-money favourite at Dundalk during madcap Cheltenham-week but was well held in that Claimer and is a 19-race turf maiden who runs for a new trainer. Reappearing Mr King has form but doesn't look ahead off the handicapper while Derry Lad reverts from hurdling last Christmas. This distance will stretch seven-time winner May Night's stamina and he is 3lb out of the handicap.
By Gary Carson - GONE FOR TEA was outclassed when last seen in Grade 3 company behind Brighterdaysahead at Down Royal in November but looks up to winning a race of this standard on previous form. The Champs Elysees mare had been runner-up on her hurdling debut over course and distance previously and that track form is a big plus. Valsorpresa is capable of better than she showed on her final outing of last season and could be a danger now with title chasing Jack Kennedy taking the mount. One Night Standard has shown promise in a couple of strong maiden hurdles this spring and is a potential improver.
By Gary Carson - A couple of the big yards look to have a very strong hold on this race for maidens rated less than 109. Gordon Elliott saddles two and PALLAS ATHENE gets the vote in first time cheekpieces. The Milan mare drops in trip having been beaten favourite when fourth over two-and-a-half miles at Down Royal 12 days ago and this looks like a nice opportunity. The Henry de Bromhead-trained The Great Unknown looks the danger. She has been competing in some strong events, including behind Tullyhill at Naas, and this is her easiest task to date on the racecourse. Hey Whatever disappointed in handicap company on her last outing at Fairyhouse but previous maiden form gives her a chance in this.
By Gary Carson - BENJIS BENEFIT was backed like defeat was out of the question at at Gowran back in January and may be worth another chance here. The Westerner gelding finished a well-beaten fourth then in very testing conditions and the ground will be a bit livelier now. This looks like a weaker race as well. Paddy Elvis ran well when third to the well-handicapper Tankardstown Diva at Down Royal last time and has to be on the shortlist off just a pound higher mark. Simply Shabra didn't run too badly on his last outing at Naas and could be place material now.
By Gary Carson - SURF CLUB is turned out again quickly after gaining his first success, over fences, at Tramore on Monday. He probably improved for jumping the larger obstacles the other day but with that confidence boosting win under his belt this looks like a mark he can score off over timber. Jacenry bumped into one in O'Faolains Glory at Down Royal last time and it was still a solid run to finish second. Off just 2lb higher he's entitled to be a big player. Stockdale was a couple of places behind Jacenry last time and has been knocking on the door. She could pick up prize-money again.
By Gary Carson - ASK ANYTHING was originally set to carry top weight in this when it was cancelled earlier in the month but has less on his plate now after the addition of a couple of higher rated rivals. Gavin Cromwell's charge ran a cracker when last seen in a competitive novice handicap final at Navan last month and there appears scope for further improvement at this marathon trip from the Ask gelding. Frontal Assault is a significant addition to the field having run well to finish fourth in the Irish National at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday. He's just a pound higher and is entitled to be a big player. Another Gordon Elliott-trained runner that could play a part is the mare Jumping Jet, who has a feather-weight with Carl Millar taking off 7lb.
By Mark Nunan - A chance is taken on WESTERN COMANDOR with a different combination of headgear tried on this second start for a new yard. A useful bumper and hurdle horse for John Ryan, he was rated as high as 116 at one time over the smaller obstacles and the six-year-old from the family of Hunt Ball may yet find his niche as a chaser. Gladiatorial hasn't been the safest conveyance over fences but has come down in the ratings and was twice second over hurdles at this venue last year. He might need the run after nearly seven months off but has to enter calculations nonetheless in such an ordinary contest. Jimli's Island is a modest maiden but was fourth at Down Royal earlier this month after two years out of action and any improvement on that would see him involved.%0A
By Mark Nunan - DUFFLE COAT looks the obvious one here after finishing second in all three chase starts this year. He hasn't got his head in front since his juvenile hurdling days but his chase form behind useful types is hard to fault and he had Bardenstown Lad over seven lengths away at Down Royal last time. Walk Away has been difficult to keep sound and the veteran's latest performances have been poor. However, he has some strong form in the book and it was less than a year ago when he was runner-up in a similar contest at Tipperary. Another Choice lacks chasing experience but is a fair hurdler with a course win to his name. He will enjoy decent ground and could show up well.
- LITTLE RICHIE has been knocking on the door of late and this looks like a good opportunity to get off the mark. Candy Outline and Court Tudor are capable of being in the shake-up too.
- Not beaten far here over shorter last time out, SAYYESTOTHELADY is taken to regain the winning thread stepping back up in trip. Success may come at the main expense of old rival Aim's Jubilee and You Can't Win.
- The step back up in trip can work the oracle for SHOOT THE BREEZE as he looks to deservedly break the maiden at the fifth time of asking. Bradley Do Right and Racing Hot Line cannot be ruled out either.
- CAMELIA ROD (third) and Skylar's Sister (fourth) are hard to split based on their recent encounter here but the former can be tough to pass when she gets it right and is taken to uphold the form. Causetowin looks the pick of the rest.
- SELES is the ready form pick in this company and is taken to gain an overdue first career success. Love Notion posted an improved effort last time and can go close with a similar effort, while Sandy Bullet is open to improvement and also warrants a betting check.
- A game runner-up last time out, SERENADE SOLDIER can go one place better in this weaker race. Panther Command was a place behind the selection that day and may have to settle for a supporting role again, although Azteca Girl can also go well.
- DREAMY SONDE has become something of a winning machine this year and the four-timer looks very much on the cards for the four-year-old. Nonesuch Girl and Shutupn'kissme are likely to be thereabouts as well.
- Now that DON'T CROSS JACK has regained the winning thread after an impressive performance over C&D last time out, he should be able to kick on. Others to note include Let Freedom Spring, Mighty Minion and Schmear.
- TIGER HUNTER scored by just over four lengths in this grade over C&D last time and he looks to have lots in his favour once again. Lord Of Light and Mongolian Master can give him the most to think about.
- All and Ima Trouble Maker both have solid chances but TROUBLE N PARADISE has fared well in tougher company of late and may find this level much more to her liking.
- This is competitive and, while the likes of Twelve Stars, Gracie's A Tiger and Asena command respect, the hat-tick seeking CHESTERETTE appeals most on the back of landing a more valuable stakes race last time out.
