Battleroftheboyne shows his mettle

Sun 11th Sep 2011, 14:57

Battleroftheboyne showed his likeness for the Curragh when getting up to deprive Sunrise Song in the opening six furlong nursery on the card.

The Michael Mulvany-trained colt followed up on his nursery success in July at the Kildare track when winning by a head with Ben Curtis in the saddle at odds of 7/1, backed in from 9/1.

“I think the stiff uphill finish here suits him. He’s a small horse but is bigger behind the saddle than in front of it and has a lot of growing to do,” Michael Mulvany said.

“He has always shown ability and a bit of give in the ground helps him. He’ll be a very good horse next year.

“He didn’t like the track at Galway (seventh on July 30th).”

Sunrise Song for Mick Halford took the runner-up berth at 14/1 while Kanes Pass was three-and-a-half lengths further back in third at 7/1.

9/2 favourite Pale Orchid came home fifth.
