Bayan was the day’s market mover in Ireland as he was hammered from 7/1 this morning down to 3/1 on the off in the opening maiden hurdle at Cork, and the money spoke well as Jason Maguire drove him home by three parts of a length.

Having raced in mid-division Maguire rode Bayan into a closing fourth coming to two out. At the last he looked poised to win on the outside and a fluent jump enabled him to fend off 11/10 favourite Courage Dawerann who was always in contention, couldn’t go with the front two after the last and took third at 9/1.

Bobby McNally representing Gordon Elliott said: “We were worried about the rain, but he’s done it well and he picked up nicely over the last two.”

Jason Maguire is over from England for three rides at Cork, two for Gordon Elliott (Roi Du Mee still to come in the Grade 3 chase at 4/15) and Born In Fire for Mouse Morris in the 3.45.

“I’ve ridden here before, but I was only a young lad then,” Maguire commented.
