Mount Colah justified good support in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase but only after surviving a blunder at the final fence.

The eight-year-old gelding was backed down to 6/4 favourite (9/4 in the morning) on the strength of promising placed efforts behind Ballycasey and Mozoltov and everything was going to plan in front approaching the last.

However the Beneficial gelding hit that fence hard and amateur rider Noel McParlan did well to keep the partnership intact.

A winning opportunity seemed to be lost as Katnap took the lead on the run-in but the 6/4 favourite rallied gamely to score by three quarters of a length.

The pair stretched ten lengths clear of Kalmann in third.

McParlan said, “He was after winging four fences in a row and I suppose he was getting a wee bit tired and did very well to stand up. He battled well to the line and is a tough horse.”
