Finn gets first 'track' winner with Torremuelle

Sat 7th Jan 2012, 14:00

Torremuelle ran out a game winner of the three-mile handicap chase in testing conditions at Thurles.

The David Finn-trained gelding jumped into the lead four from home and stuck to his guns well down the straight.

Promising claimer Ben Dalton got a good tune from the well supported 8/1 shot (from 14/1 in the morning) as he battled to a length-and-a-quarter success. Cochise tried hard to throw down a challenge from before the last but couldn't peg back the winner while 33/1 shot Amber Knight stayed on in third.

The winner had been pulled up on his last visit here in December but had run with credit when fourth at Tramore on New Year's Day.

It was a first racecourse success for Mallow handler Finn, who has trained 11 point-to-point winners.

"I train mainly point-to-pointers. This fella showed plenty two years ago but all my horses were wrong after that," said Finn.

"He ran very well the last day. There are not enough of these races for this type of horse. They all tend to come at once."
