Jockey Mikey Hamill rode out his claim at Gowran today, steering the Philip Fenton trained Secret Cargo to win the Gain Beginners Chase despite making some early jumping errors.
Rated 93 over hurdles in a race confined to horses rated 102 or less, Secret Cargo also held a chase mark of 102 and while he blundered at the fourth and fifth fences, eventually beat runner-up Handsworth by two lengths.
Fenton later stated “at long last, as he's a long time trying. It's a while since he won his maiden hurdle and he's found things difficult.
“He got his day and the conditions of the race suited him. He'll probably go for another handicap now and he's for sale as well.”
Hamill was based with trainer Kim Bailey in England before returning to Ireland in 2019, and has combined successfully with eight different trainers in that time.
