Mallards In Flight provided trainer Gavin Cromwell and rider Danny Benson with a welcome change of luck when causing a 33/1 shock in the Summer BBQ At Clonmel Races June 13th Handicap Hurdle.

The eight-year-old mare led approaching the straight and stayed on well to draw clear on the run-in for a six and a half lengths verdict over Shantou Shine

The 5/2 favourite Abolitionist was a further length and a half away in third, with All Honours in fourth. She Be Fine was staying on with a chance of being placed when falling at the last.

A delighted Benson said, “I went to England last year to Jonjo (O’Neill), although it was more for schooling than anything. It was a great experience. I’ve got too heavy for the Flat and was in Gordon Elliott’s over the winter but the plan is to go freelance now.”

Cromwell said, “I lost Balrath Hope who broke a shoulder and have four in training. She really wanted the trip and today was her day. Hopefully she might win another one.”
