Murtagh bruised and sore after Dundalk fall

Sun 6th Sep 2009, 18:08

There was drama in the concluding two mile handicap at Dundalk where Johnny Murtagh was lucky to escape serious injury after taking a nasty looking fall from favourite Hurricane Alley

The Willie Mullins-trained gelding was ninth at the time in the 14 runner event when appearing to clip heels at the two furlong pole sending Murtagh crashing into the all-weather surface. Queen Althea was brought down by the faller but her young rider Tim Carroll was able to walk in afterwards.

There followed a number of anxious minutes as the Ballydoyle stable jockey was attended to on the track but he was conscious at all times. His neck was put in a brace as a precaution but he was back on his feet on returning to the jockey's room.

Turf Club doctor John Kennedy said, "He is bruised and sore on his upper left leg but hopefully it is not too serious"

The race went to Royal Entourage who took it up at the two furlong pole, and held the late charge of Le Leopard by a head.
