Smullen doubles up as the favourite obliges

Tue 17th May 2011, 21:22

For the third year running Dermot Weld & Pat Smullen combined to win the last race of the Killarney May Festival, this year winning with Sense of Purpose who was sent off the 4/9 favourite.

As the market suggested Run For Sol (3/1) was her main danger and so it proved during the race, the two coming home twelve lengths clear of the remainder, led by Syann

The second favourite led entering the straight but was joined by the winner 2f out, who then edged ahead. It looked as if Pat Smullen (who was recording a double, having scored with Further Detail earlier) would draw on from there but credit to the runner-up who kept on gamely without matching her rival, going down by just a length at the line.

Winning trainer Dermot Weld was not present for the win, but jockey Pat Smullen said: "She has an awkward head carriage but the conditions suited her here today".
