Stamina proves the Key
Major Key proved tough in the novice handicap hurdle at Downpatrick as he kept on doggedly to score.
Front-runner Chief Oscar looked to have his field in trouble before the second last but came under pressure at the final flight.
Conor Maxwell found a willing partner in Major Key, who grabbed his rival on the run-in to post a six-length victory.
"I fancied him. He was a bit disappointing at Down Royal (last time over hurdles) but some of mine were out of sorts then," said winning trainer Mervyn Torrens.
Torrens was landing the same race for the third time and said: "Downpatrick has always been lucky for me. This lad is just a little handicapper and will stay in similar races."
